In the age of online singles, Robotique feels like an album. The album narrates like a science fiction odyssey with ghostly distortions and digital landscape. Yet it still manages to appeal with unabashed dance pop.
The band reels between power riffs and electronic beats that sound like they came from an 8bit Nintendo.
If I had any criticism of the album it would be in the few places their wild experimentation becomes a little too atonal and just plain noisy. I mean, I understand the need to experiment, but two minutes into HFM (track 9) - I just want to skip the song. I think this happens quite a bit to bands who become a success by breaking out of the mold, and feel the need to stay fresh as they mature.
Such aberrations from their greatness hardly diminish from what I would call a solid album. On the whole, I don’t quite like Robotique Majestique as their earlier work (Paparazzi Lightning and Delete.Delete.I.Eat.Meat are among my all time favorites). But songs like “Heavy Heart”(track 2) and Dancing on My Grave” (track 5) will definitely make you break out the strobe light for a spontaneous dance party.
For creativity and electronic elegance - I give Robotique Majestique 7.5 Happy Orphans.
