Exclusive Warped Tour Interview with Meg Frampton

Guerrilla Radio talks with Meg Frampton of the great Meg & Dia at Warped Tour.

Brennan Divett: So how’s it going?

Meg Frampton: It’s going pretty good, it’s not very hot today so I’m kind of surprised. Yesterday it was really hot.

Like how hot was it?

It was like 107 or something.

For reals?

Yeah it was sweltering, I had to take two showers.

Two bag showers or real showers?

Two shower showers. Wait, what is a fake shower?

Oh, we were just talking about bag showers a second ago.

Oh, bag showers. No, we don’t have that luxury although I would love that. We have to walk all the way across the field and back every time.

So do you shower at the college?

Yeah. Or the activities center, is that part of the college?

Umm, yeah I think so.

I didn’t know there was a college here I just thought it was an athletic something.

Well cool, congratulations on your new record. It came out in April right?

Thank you, yeah.

Yeah it’s really good. How is it working out for you being on Warner Bros. now coming from Doghouse?

I think that both of the labels were really personable. The major label isn’t as scary as it sounds. We’re actually on a sub label, we’re on Sire, so we’re not on Warner Bros. So we have our A & R people and we see them pretty frequently and their always talking to us about what our game plan is. And it was great working with both of them, when you’re the artist you’re mainly just focusing on your music and you let the management team and booking agent and the label just kind of form around you and do their thing. And I haven’t had any problems with either of them.

Cool. So do they have much of a say in the making of your record? Cause I noticed that you had like string arrangements and stuff.

Yeah, well the string arrangements I wrote actually. Like I wrote out the sheet music, I didn’t play them cause I don’t know how to play the violin.

Yeah we watched the DVD and you wrote those on Garage Band right?

Yeah I played it on Garage Band and then they really did it. So I guess it’s kind of cheating halfway, but I definitely wrote the parts.

Ha ha it’s cool. So did you have a lot bigger budget being on a major?

Yeah that’s one of the differences. They give you more tour support, they give you more money for your record, more marketing money. That’s always good

Cool, so when you’re not signing and doing interviews, and actually playing, what bands are you watching on Warped Tour? Like what are you favorite Warped Tour bands?

Well, I don’t have any favorite Warped Tour bands, but I did go see out of curiosity Millionaires.

Really?

Yeah, and Brokencyde. I just wanted to see what the word on the street was about, and I went and saw them.

So what was your opinion, what’s the verdict? Are you now a Millionaires fan?

There’s a lot of energy, it’s not my thing but kids seem to enjoy it, so good for them.

Right on, well thanks so much for you’re time.

You’re welcome.

Do you have anything you would want the readers on Guerrilla Radio to know, like any news, or shoutouts?

No, I just want to say to go on a philosophical run here that I think that the general direction of what music has been saying has been very negative and disappointing. And I think that kids have embraced that, like all about sex and drinking, and that seems to be all kids have to live for, you know? And I think that sex and drinking is a good thing if you do it the right way, but when that becomes your main focus of life, I think that’s kind of disappointing. So, I would just tell kids to not get sucked into that. Don’t get your head down cause there are still people writing music about the other topics.

Do you try to always have a positive message, like to influence kids for good?

We’re not always positive, I mean life has its ups and downs, and there’s a lot of negative things. There’s a lot of things that aren’t always happy that we write about. But don’t make the main focus about abusing sex, cause it’s not just about being a slut or a whore and hooking up with other man whores. It can be a lot better than that, and I don’t thing kids can see that anymore because of what music is saying.
